In Belarus, there are three main rivers: the Neman, the Pripyat, and the Dnieper. Belarus has a continental climate that is humid. Summers are too hot, and winters are cold. Belarus has some natural resources, such as deposits of peat or tuff, less oil and natural gas, granite, limestone, chalk, clay, and gravel. Belarus is located between 51 ° and 57 ° N latitudes, and 23 ° and 33 ° E longitudes. Its extension is 560 km (350 miles) from north to south, and 650 km (400 miles) from west to east. It is landlocked, relatively level, with wide tracts of marshy soil. The woods occupy about 40 percent of Belarus. In Belarus, about 11,000 lakes are located. The Neman, the Pripyat, and the Dnieper are three major rivers flowing in the region. The Neman flows to the western Baltic Sea, and then the Pripyat flows to the east Dnieper, and the Dnieper flows to the south Black Sea. Belarus borders five countries: Latvia in the north, Lithuania in the northwest, Poland in the west, Russia in the north and east, and Ukraine in the south. In 1995 and 1996, the Treaties delineated the boundaries of Belarus with Latvia and Lithuania, and in 2009, Belarus ratified the 1997 Treaty defining the boundary between Belarus and Ukraine. Belarus and Lithuania signed the final boundary demarcation documents in February 2007.
